Our Morning At The Farmer’s Market

IMG_3237-1I’m really not into jumping up on our days off and heading out the door without my morning coffee, but today was an exception. We headed downtown to the Farmer’s Market.

I overheard a women in my Aquacize class say that right now the market was “bountiful” so I figured we’d better check it out. Boy, was she right! There were tomatoes upon tomatoes, squash and zucchini, green beans and peppers, peaches and melons, flowers and herbs – OH MY! There really was too much to even mention it all!

Ella and Andrew really enjoyed it! Andrew spent his time all kicked back in his stroller and taking it all in. Ella had a great time going from booth to booth checking out what they had to offer and picking up everything she could get her little hands on. She was also in heaven looking at all the dogs that were there and even picked up some homemade doggie treats for Daisy. Ella just loves dogs! She had to tell everyone about her “Daisy dog” at home. She just recently started having conversations with anyone in public that will listen. Yesterday at the library while I was talking with another mom, I noticed her sitting with a mom she had never met and was telling her all about her brother, her dog, her toys and how she got the scar above her eye. (jumping on the bed and 4 stitches!) She’s too funny!

Right next to the market is a little cafe that we have been meaning to try, soIMG_3246-1 we stopped in for some lattes and muffins. It was hoppin! They had live music (yes, it was only 10am) and the place was packed! We ended up sitting outside, which was a good thing since my kids devoured their food and had crumbs everywhere!

Sitting under an umbrella at the little bistro table it hit me, I really didn’t even feel like I was at home. You know the feeling you get when you’re on vacation and having a really good time? That’s how I felt and I was only 10mins from my house! Getting out and experiencing something new and fun close to home is a great thing! You save the money of travel, support the local economy and the local farmers and businesses. PLUS – you know you’re getting the freshest, safest produce you can buy for your family! How awesome is that?

IMG_3262-2I’m looking forward to making some fresh zucchini and squash casserole this weekend! It’s my favorite summer veggie dish. I’ll be sure to post the recipe here with some photos. As for now, I think we’ll enjoy the rest of our “vacation at home” weekend and head out to the pool for a bit and soak in some of the summer sun we’ve been missing out on lately. It’s a hot one!

Here’s some more pictures from our morning!

Ya know, I haven’t been to the one downtown yet and I keep meaning to go. We always go to the one on Thursday’s at the fairgrounds. I need to head out this week and pick up some more green beans.

Cat, I haven’t been to the one at the fairgrounds yet. I forgot about it! I am only watching 1 child this week besides my 2 so maybe we can check it out! But, I did get some greenbeans the other day since I saw your post…they looked YUMMY!

Love the sunglasses! What a great way to teach them about healthy foods. My biggest battle is getting my 4 year old to eat something other than mac-n-cheese and chicken nuggets!

Yes, my 3 year old gets in those ruts with Cheeseburgers. She LOVES them and would have them at every meal. But, I am lucky in the fact that she would much rather have veggies and fruit than anything else. I sometimes have trouble getting her to eat chicken.

I love farmer’s markets – in Anchorage there are 4!!! It’s so great to know we are getting great produce and supporting our local farmers. I’ve heard that when kids get to pick out fresh ingredients and help make food from them, they’re more willing to eat new things (but I don’t know, since my DD is only 8 months old).

That is a favorite weekend outing for us. My husband and I will drive a good hour and a half into Boston just to check out the farmer’s market. :-)
We love it.

Hope your day is beautiful
