Make It Monday – RAIN STICK

by Kasey

We had a lazy day this past Saturday.  We stayed in our jammies and watched a little TV and munched on some yummy snacks before really getting motivated.  I love those kind of days!   But, by about 10am, the kids were getting bord and restless.  They were ready to do something fun – even though I was still in my coffee and blogging mode.  : )

Ella is really into crafts and drawing, painting and coloring these days and had just unrolled a whole roll of old Christmas Wrapping paper the previous day to “wrap” presents for her pretend birthday party.  Whatever – as long as she’s not sitting in front of the TV all day, I’m OK with a little mess.  (a little! LOL)  All the sudden she says to me…”mom, lets make a rain stick!”  OK..I thought.  I’ll just whip one of those up!  LOL  I’m pretty resourceful (not as much as Resourceful Mommy) but I really didn’t have a clue on this one.  But, my little PBS Sprout lover did!  She came running in with 2 cardboard tubes (one for her and one for her brother) from the wrapping paper from the day before.  “Here we go mom!  We can make the rain sticks like Nina and Star!”

She told me that she would get started decorating the tubes while I went to the web to print out the whole instructions.  (If you watch Sprout – you’ll get that this is what they tell the kids to tell their parents to do! )  But, my little Ella already knew and I didn’t even have to refer back to the “web”!

So, I thought I’d share this fun little craft with all you wonderful people so that you can maybe make a rain stick with your kids!  It’s fun and easy and my kids are still playing with them!

Step 1 – Decorate your tube with crayons, markers, paint or whatever you have handy.

Step 2 – Cover one end with paper and tape shut.

Step 3 – Crumble strips of aluminum foil and put them in the tube.

Step 4 – Fill the tube with rice or a dry macaroni noodles & close up the open end with paper and tape.

Step 5 – SHAKE and ENJOY!!

And there you have it!  Hours of enjoyment for a couple of reused cardboard tubes.  Fun AND green!

LOL! Yes, I am still waiting on that to happen. I just used the clear packing tape to cover the paper and put a ton of it on there. So far so good!

You know, it was a rainy day when we did it! The kids had a blast shaking their sticks when it would start to rain harder outside!
