Project Home Organization: A Playroom Makeover On A Budget

A NEW Playroom

A NEW Playroom

Here it is!  My favorite room in the house – so far.  Our playroom makeover is complete and has been played in many times already.

For under $1000, I was able to totally transform a dark, cluttered room in our home to a bright and cheery playroom that is kid and adult friendly on a budget!

In case you missed it, here is the before photo:

Before: Playroom

Before: Playroom

Before, our room was dark, cluttered and very unorganized.  Nothing had a proper place and toys were just stuck in every nook and cranny.

Playroom Makeover

Bright & Cheerful Play Area

Now, our playroom is bright, cheerful, organized and much more spacious.

With furniture from Kidcraft, JC Penney and Target, our room has been transformed into a totally different space.

Toy Storage Unit

Toy Storage Unit

The storage unit that resembles a Pottery Barn Kids favorite of mine, is actually a very affordable piece from JC Penney.

Open storage unit

Open storage unit

Very durable and stylish, this unit conceals toys behind doors and in canvas storage totes from Target on sale for just under $10 each.  It’s amazing how much cleaner the room now stays now that each toy has it’s own home.

Playroom Seating

Playroom seating/reading area

The seating/reading area is a favorite of  all the kids.  The toddlers feel very independent climbing up in the chairs and the preschoolers enjoy their reading time alone.  A perfect nook in the room!

Changing Table

Changing table re-do

When the search for a new changing table for this small wall area came up short, I decided to try out my crafty skills and paint my current one.  I used a celery green paint to match some of the furnishings and gave it a good 2-3 coats one afternoon.  By evening it was dry and looked brand new!

I added a shelf from Homegoods, that was just sitting in the garage, above the table to hold wipes containers for each toddler in my care.  The containers and baskets on the shelves below contain diapers, extra clothes, blankets and pillows.  The perfect $8 solution!

Framed photo

Personal touches

Along with $15 decals from Target and finger painted art from the kids, I decided to add another personal touch to the room walls. I snapped a photo of all the kids on the porch swing, blew it up for $7 at Walgreens and framed it with a $5 frame from Target.  It came out adorable and very professional looking!

After: Playroom

After: Playroom

I love this room!

With a little hard work and vision, my dream of having a Pottery Barn room was created on a Target budget in a very short amount of time!

Next up on my Project Home Organization – the entry way!

It’s a goodie, too!

UPDATE: JCP doesn’t have this exact system anymore. But, they do carry one from Linden Street.  It looks just the same. I actually ordered 3 more cubby pieces, but they were a brighter white than the ones I have, so I can’t use them. But they look nice.  Here’s the link!

  1. Great job, beautiful room, but I wouldn’t have half a hundred to makeover a room ;( The storage units are great. I will have to look them up on JcPenny’s website ;)

  2. I meant half a thousand! oops. hehe

    • Hi Tracy!

      Thanks for stopping by!

Normally, I wouldn’t have the money to do a large makeover like this either, but I was lucky enough to get a grant for my childcare program that covered a lot of the furniture and toys.

  3. Tenille says:

I LOVE IT!!! Kasey can you come up to Canada and redo MY toy room? You’ve inspired me, though I think mine will have to be a winter project. I LOVE the storage unit, very useful and I definitely need something like that, though we have no JC Penny here, boo.

    • Thank you, Tenille! I am soooo happy with it!

I would LOVE to come to Canada to help you out! Let’s plan it! : )
But, I hear Canada is wayyyyy colder in the Winter.

  4. Meredith says:

It looks great!!! Congrats on the grant you did such a great job! Love love the colors!!

    • HI Meredith ~

I’m glad to hear you like the colors of the playroom. I think they reflect the rest of our home and style. Calm and relaxing. I didn’t want them to seem too girlish, since we have boys here too! haha!

  5. Thanks for the email, but I couldn’t email you back (link not right or??) So I wanted to know…What child care program do you have? Is it like daycare? I do childcare in my home for some families. Would something like I do be “grant” worthy do you think? hmmmm. Just picking your brain!

    • HI again!

Weird on the link..my email is kasey at allthingsmamma dot com – just incase you need it : )

I have a licensed in-home daycare. I watch 5 children and my own 2. I have applied for grants in the past and finally got one!

If I were you, I’d research your local childcare connection type programs and your state’s Dept of Children Services programs and ask about local grant opportunities. I’m sure there is something out there for you!!

  6. Thank you for the info! I’m not licensed though (too many hoops to get hooked up with DHS) and haven’t really wanted to be. But one of my friends might benefit from that info. I’ll have to share. Thanks again ;) Enjoy that room!!

  13. The room is gorgeous and I love the colors! That toy storage unit is great. I assume that is three pushed together? That looks like the solution I’ve been searching for in my 4 yr old’s room.

    • HI Melinda!

Thank you so much for your comment. You’re right…it is 3 pushed together. Actually – it’s 6. 3 on top and 3 on the bottom. There are other units you can purchase as well! Good luck!!

  14. OH MY Can I hire you to come do over our playroom? It looks fantastic!

    • Thanks, Brandy! This is probably my favorite room in the house. Now, if I could just get on my own bedroom…that NEEDS to be my favorite room! haha!

  17. Hi Kasey,
I know this isn’t a new post, but I just came across it while searching for inspiration on how to reorganize our playroom. Yours came out so great! I love that you have open storage in the baskets, but also cabinets to hide stuff away. And the reading area is such a great idea!

I’d love it if you’d come link up to my Playroom Party!

Your ideas are wonderful & are really inspiring me right now. I am sick to death of the clutter at our house & looking to some home improvement projects. I loved your laundry area makeover (since we cant have a laundry room this idea was great.

The playroom is wonderful. We currently have an open playroom in our living room (which we are currently trying to add a home office to as well. Now I am challenged with coming up with a living room for us that also houses a play area and home office…all in one. Granted the room is huge but having it all flow & be organized is hard.

    Keep the ideas coming.

    • HI Jessica!

I’m so glad you are enjoying my organizational posts. I’m on the war path again in my home to clear out the clutter and make life simpler, easier.

Good luck on your projects! Make sure to let me know how it goes!

  19. Love your playroom. I am in the process of designing one for my son right now and want to get that storage unit. I wasn’t able to find it on JC penney’s site. Is it all one piece? Do you know what it’s called? Thanks so much!!

  20. It looks amazing! I love the toy storage area!

  23. The playroom looks so beautiful and organized!! Question for you – what did you do with all the walkers and bigger toys? Do you just have them loose in the room against a wall?

  24. Where did you get the kids couches? I really like them.

  25. Hey! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the wall color in the playroom. Do you happen to remember the color and type of paint used. Thanks! :)

  26. Hi there! I found your blog via pinterest and I am loving your PB knockoff from JCP. I saw in a comment that it is a few pieces put together. How has it held up? I have been scouring the JCP website so that I didnt have to bother you, but here I am…would you mind linking me to the 3 pieces? Thank you!

    • Ashley, we still love the furniture and it’s help up very well. Still looks new! If it get scuffs on it, we just use a magic eraser to get it off. No big deal! I will say that the desk is my least favorite thing. It is too wobbly. I have no idea why. Every piece of furniture we’ve gotten from JCP (alot!) is wonderful!

  27. Thanks for replying! So glad the furniture has held up! Can you please link the shelves from JCP? I clicked the ones above, but they didn’t work. And I’ve also searched JCP and I don’t see the individual pieces. I prb am seeing them though and don’t realize it.

  28. Wow!!! Thank you. Target is my heaven on earth. I seriously can’t get out under $40. Might as well continue that tradition. Thanks!

  29. Where did you get the table and chairs and the cute little pink chairs from?
