Ella went to a birthday party this past weekend and part of the grab bag when she left was a CD of all of the little girl’s favorite songs. GOOD IDEA – except that 11 out of the 20 songs are HORRIBLE! I was really shocked that a 6 year old’s mom would hand out that kind of stuff to other 6 year olds. There’s songs talking about “brushing your teeth with a bottle of Jack” and other sexual content that made me blush! Totally NOT what I want my kids to hear now or even in years to come. I’m totally not a prude, but feel that kind of subject matter is NOT appropriate for a 6 year old. I want to teach my kids to be respectful and loving and not plant seeds that will turn out bad now or in years to come. But, I find that she’s being influenced everywhere she turns and a lot of the time I’m not happy about the source.
So, my husband and I went through the entire CD and took off the songs that were OK for her to listen to and we’re putting other Christian Pop songs on there mixed in so that she gets a little of both worlds. We normally listen to contemporary Christian Music as a family and the kids LOVE it! We all sing along in the car and even at Church. We even listen to a few of mom and dad’s favorites from today’s hits. But, the stuff that was on this CD wasn’t even something I was comfortable hearing.
What do you think? Would you let your kids listen to the whole CD since it was a gift? Do you let your kids listen to popular music on the radio EVEN if it has MANY inappropriate lyrics for a child? Fill me in!

Honestly, since you didn’t say what songs were on there, I can’t really give my opinion on whether they were appropriate or not BUT if you aren’t comfortable with the music, just throw it out! And I would think twice about allowing your daughter to go over the little girl’s house if your parenting style conflicts with the other mom’s – it likely applies to much more than the music your children are allowed to listen to.
Well, Jenn to tell you the truth, I don’t even know the titles to most of those songs since I don’t listen to them. I did listen to each one though and heard lines of “passion in my pants”, “put your lips together and blow” and many other lines that I sure don’t want my kids singing around the house and at school. And, you’re right and thanks for mentioning, that going to this little girl’s house is NOT a good idea! I’m still learning! : )
