Where To Find Coupons

January 17, 2010 by Kasey
Filed under Frugal Living, Home & Garden

10.2.09 - CouponsPeople ask me this question all the time. (And it’s not at all because I look like a lunatic coupon chick at the grocery store!)

Drum roll please…

· Sunday paper inserts – This is the best known source for coupons. If you subscribe, it’s normally cheaper. Many newspapers will offer deals when you subscribe as well.  For example, my newspaper gives me a huge book of coupons (like the Entertainment Book) when I pay for the whole year. And who doesn’t love coupons delivered right to their door?

· Coupons.com Printable coupons with a large variety of brands. Updates at least once a month.

· Smartsource.com – Printable grocery coupons.

· Redplum.com – Printable grocery coupons.

· Product websites -Visit the websites of your favorite brands to see if they offer coupons. If they offer a newsletter, sign up for even more offers. Here are a few examples:

o Betty Crocker

o Pillsbury

· Store websites- Visit the websites of your favorite stores to see if they offer coupons. If they offer newsletters, sign up for even more offers. Here are a few examples:

o Target – Coupon generator for Target printable coupons

o Meijer - Coupon generator for Meijer printable coupons

o Giant – Sign up for the monthly newsletter and receive coupons via email

o Weis – Printable coupons for Weis Markets

o Rite Aid – Printable coupons for Rite Aid

· My Points – Here, you can get printable grocery coupons that will also earn you points when you redeem them!

· Upromise – eCoupons that add money to your college savings account when you purchase those products.

· Eat Better America - Printable grocery coupons.

· Box Tops for Education – Printable coupons for grocery items that offer box tops for education.

· Coupon Bug – More printable grocery coupons.

· Mambo Sprouts – Printable grocery coupons for organic products.

· Compliment or comment on a particular product – If you use a product that you love or one that you hate, let the company know! They love consumer feedback and will often send you coupons to show their appreciation. Simply visit their website (most have a contact form) or send a snail mail letter to the company. If you don’t know their web address, simply do an online search for the manufacturer. I have done this numerous times and they DO send coupons.

· Join coupon trading groups – There are probably lots of coupons you get that you can’t use, so why not trade them for coupons you CAN use? Join a group like Hot Coupon World (my personal favorite), A Full Cup, or Organic Grocery Deals (for organic grocery savings) where they have a trading forum, among tons of other couponing resources.

· Inside packages - Be sure to check your product packages before throwing them away. Many packages have coupons on the outside or inside.

· Blinkies - These are the coupons that are spit out of those red machines at the grocery store. My kids love to go around the store finding these for me!

· Peelies – These are those little coupons you can peel off the packaging and use when you purchase the item.

· Tearpads – Be on the lookout for specific product displays in the grocery store. Many times these will also contain tearpad coupons.

· Magazines – Many magazines contain random grocery coupons. Additionally, magazines such as All You have tons of coupons per issue.

· Wine Tags – These are coupons that hang around the neck of a wine bottle. Of course, I live in PA where you have to go to the liquor store to get wine, so this doesn’t apply to every region.

· Catalinas – These are the coupons that print out at the register for purchasing certain items. Make sure the cashier gives them to you before you leave!

And there you have it! Did I miss your favorite coupon resources? Please leave a comment and share them!

Here’s a great homemade bath and body sugar scrub to make for yourself or to give as a gift. Place in a pretty glass jar and tie with a ribbon – beautiful!

cranscrub

1/2 cup frozen cranberries
1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin
1/4 cup sweet almond oil
1/4 cup sugar
2 drops orange essential oil
2 tablespoons oat powder (give oatmeal a whirl in the blender)

Combine cranberries, glycerin, and almond oil in food processor and give a whirl for about 30 seconds until just blended without turning the berries to a pulp.  (keep the mixture thick)

Place the mixture into a bowl and stir in the sugar and essential oil.  Add just enough of the oat powder to create a cohesive mixture to apply to your skin.

Use in the shower or bath and massage in and rinse with warm water.

Are You Supermarket Savvy?

Are You Supermarket Savvy?  Test Your Grocery Smarts

By Julia Gaynor, Chief Savings Officer, Eversave.com

With kids heading back to school, moms everywhere are tasked with packing brown bag lunches again for their little ones. They’ll scour the grocery store for lunch and snack options that are tasty, nutritious and equally affordable.

According to Julia Gaynor, Chief Savings Officer for Eversave.com (an online savings destination site for women), “There’s a savings opportunity available for just about everyone – you just have to know where to look.”

So, how smart of a shopper are you?  There are certain “supermarket tricks” that savvy consumers use to save big, but what are they – and do you know the fact from fiction?

See where you net out with this true or false test on supermarket smarts created by Gaynor.

True or False? To get the freshest milk and other products out of the refrigerated dairy case, reach towards the back because that’s where they put the newest (aka freshest) items.

True. Whether they stock from the front or back of the case, the best way to tell if something’s fresh is to check the expiration date. But, if all of the dates are the same, the items in the back will be “freshest” because they’re furthest from the door – which is always being open and shut by customers.

True or False? To get extra savings, wait to buy products the day they expire.

False. Unless you plan on using them within hours, you’re taking a pretty big risk buying soon-to-expire food. If the groceries rot before you have a chance to eat them, you’ve wasted the entire cost of your purchase.

True or False? The “end cap” items at the end of supermarket aisles are always the best buys.

False. Sometimes, those items are on sale, but sometimes, they’re just the ones the store managers want you to buy. Look carefully to make sure they’re really on sale before adding those items to your cart.

True or False? The cheapest items are usually on the lowest shelves.

True. This is a supermarket tactic is tried and true, and even if your store doesn’t use it, it’s used often enough for us to suggest that you don’t ignore those bottom shelves! You never know what you’d find down there…

True or False? Even though they’re on sale, dented cans should be avoided.

True. It’s tempting to look at a dented can of tuna that’s over half off and think, “What harm could a little dent do?” The truth is, a little dent could do a lot of harm, potentially letting air into your food and causing food-borne botulism. So, to be on the safe side, steer clear of dented cans and find your bargains elsewhere.

True or False? It’s always cheaper to buy in bulk.

True. Of course, this is definitely true when buying non-perishable items, and particularly if your family includes more than one person. But don’t buy perishables in bulk or you could be wasting – not saving.

The Top Five Sneaky Tricks Retailers Don’t Want You to Know About

1. Ignore expiration datesRetailers want you in the store to shop!  Even if the date on your coupon has expired, always ask.  Many retailers will honor savings deals post-expiration date.

2. Bulk buying deals - Many locations, especially grocery stores, will offer deals for buying in bulk (i.e. 10 for 10). Contrary to popular belief, retailers will often honor the sales price, even if you plan to buy fewer items than are listed in the original deal.

3. Stack coupons! You want to make sure that you have all the best coupons in your arsenal.  Have a special place where you keep your coupons and stay updated on sales notices for all of your favorite retailers.  It is in your best interest to print and click every coupon you find, even if you don’t need it right now.  Stack up the coupons you’ve accumulated with store sales opportunities to really maximize savings. Coupon sites usually update their savings opportunities on a weekly basis, so make sure you’re keeping up with the latest and greatest offers.  If you play your coupons right, you can not only get things for free, but you might even make a few extra bucks!

4. Bring retail competitor’s coupons with you when you shop. Many retailers will honor their rivals’ offers.

5. Shop with a mission! Retailers are strategic in the placement of products and deals throughout the store. Ever wonder why candy and gum are located in the checkout aisle?  Walk out of the store with only what you intended to purchase.

*Join me next week for more tips and tricks on saving money for your family in honor of National Coupon Month from Eversave.com!
