Most air fresheners are made with chemicals and are releasing toxins into your air every time you spray. Try all natural or green alternatitves instead!
Opt for a beeswax or soy candle, a bouquet of fresh flowers, essential oils spritzed into the air or onto a dried flowers and even white vinegar sprayed onto surfaces will deodorize.
Some of my favorite green brands that carry great candles and air fresheners:

Green Tip – Keep Your Fireplace Damper Closed

With winter here and in full force, a lot of us are building fires in our fireplaces to keep warm on those chili nights. Something you may not think to do after the flames go out, is to close the damper.
Keep your fireplace damper closed unless you have a fire going – then for heaven’s sake…don’t forget to open it!
8% of the heat (or cool air in Summer) in your home can escape right up the chimney adding up to a loss of $100 year in heating or cooling costs.

Green Tip – Seal Drafts Around Windows and Doors

By keeping heat from escaping through windows and doors, you can cut your heating costs dramatically!
By lighting a candle and holding it in front of the window or doors seams, you’ll be able to detect drafty spots by watching the flame. If it doesn’t flicker, you’re good to go. If it does…time to seal up!
Seal the drafts around your windows and doors by buying weather-stripping or even the plastic window coverings you can buy at your local hardware store or big box store.

When buying whole-bean or ground coffee, look or organic, Fair Trade, Bird Friendly, or Rainforest Alliance certification seals. The coffee farms that produce the coffee practice sustainable agriculture to preserve or restore ecosystems in the rainforest.
Just one household switching to certified coffee a year is enough to protect 9,200 square feet of rainforest.

Green Tip – Buy Gallon Jugs Of Milk

Buy a gallon of milk instead of half gallon containers.
By shopping for a gallon jug of milk instead of two half-gallon containers you’ll be helping have a big impact on the environment. It takes so much less energy to manufacture bigger containers, an average household could save enough energy to run a refrigerator for three days!
Also, don’t forget to also recycle that empty plastic milk jug when you are finished!

Buy your baby’s food in glass jars next time you head to the Market.
Each year, parents send tons of used baby food containers to the landfill. Buying glass jars can be be recycled or re-used in projects around the house. The mini glass jars can be used to hold buttons or screws or used in craft projects to hold paint or glue.

Green Tip – Scrape Your Dishes

Scrape your dirty dishes into the trash before putting them into the dishwasher.
Scraping any leftover food on your plates into the trash or adding to your compost pile can save up to 10 gallons of water than by putting it in the garbage disposal in your sink.
Most newer models of dishwashers are energy efficient and can remove any left on food and will save water more than doing them by hand as well.

Keep the oven door closed while you’re baking your favorite dessert or cooking your dinner.
Every time you open the oven door, the temperature drops 20-50 degrees . It takes a lot of energy to get back up to your original cooking temperature. So, peek by looking in the oven door window and by turning on the light instead.
By keeping the oven door closed, you’ll save on your electricity and your food will be done sooner!

Have you tried switching your regular toilet paper to a recycled brand? Many recycled toilet paper is made from recycled paper NOT trees and doesn’t contain bleach or other harmful chemicals.
Switching to recycled toilet paper uses less energy and fewer resources to produce and it’s comparable in price to regular non-recycled brands.
If every household in the US replaced one four-pack of toilet paper with a recycled brand, it would save 998,000 trees and 350 million gallons of water. It would also prevent more than 60,600 pounds of chlorine pollution.
Keep on the lookout next week for my Review & Giveaway of Marcal Small Steps Recycled Paper Products! Enter for a chance to try out all their products in your home!
