Two of my favorite things to make are cupcakes and cake balls. So, it just seemed like Cupcake Cake Balls would be a perfect combination. These little, sweet balls of chocolaty goodness are fun to make and even better to eat!
To make Cupcake Cake Balls, start by making a basic cake pop recipe with your favorite Chocolate Cake box mix. YES (GASP!!) a box cake mix is fine for this. (Oh, go ahead and try it….no body will ever know the difference. I promise.) Using a small cookie scoop, make your cake balls and put in the fridge for a couple of hours or the freezer for about 15 minutes. You want the balls to be firm – but not frozen.
While you’re waiting on the cake balls to firm up. Melt your favorite candy coating into a piping bag – I used Wilton Candy Melts – Mint Chocolate flavor. (Mmmmm….mint and chocolate….need I say more?!) Next, fill a medium-sized plastic candy cup mold with the melted chocolate. Immediately push the cake ball down into the chocolate until it comes up the sides of the ball. Be careful to not push too hard where melted chocolate goes everywhere. Pop the entire candy mold into the freezer to set the candy for a few minutes.
Remove from the freezer and pop out the entire candy/cake ball by giving the mold a little twist. By holding the bottom of the cupcake ball, dip the top into your choice of melted candy coating and give it a little twist as you let the excess drip off. Immediately decorate with sprinkles, M&Ms, or any decorations you wish.
I like to store mine in an airtight container in the fridge, but they may be left on the counter.
That’s it! Sounds like a lot…but it’s really not once you get started.
Cupcake Cake Balls are adorable and so fun to eat! Perfect for baby or wedding showers, birthday parties, or even a petite dessert party!
Enjoy!
